Abstract

Human Development Index (HDI) represents a universal indicator to measure social and economic achievements. It is of interest to understand whether a higher level of the human development index generated a greater or lesser impact of covid-19 associated with the mortality, fatality and incidence rates of the territories to be evaluated (the municipalities of the State of Espírito Santo in Brazil and counties of the Republic of Ireland). Cross-sectional ecological study, with secondary data from official entities of both territories, reviewed in October 2022.

The type of statistical correlation in clusters, between the variables mortality and HDI did not reach statistical significance. The correlation between the lethality and HDI variables showed an irrelevant correlation, being negative in the State of Espírito Santo and positive in Ireland. And for the incidence of COVID-19 in both territories, there was a very weak positive correlation with the HDI, being stronger in the State of Espírito Santo compared to Ireland.

In conclusion, there was no correlation between HDI and Mortality. Lethality showed an irrelevant behavior and opposite correlation, with Brazil having a negative type, which could explain a better response of its health system, thus breaking the paradigm that more developed nations always have better results to fight diseases. Also, the incidence of both territories had a very weak positive correlation, being stronger in the State of Espírito Santo compared to Ireland, possibly associated with the non-compliance with effective social distancing measures in the State of Espírito Santo in Brazil.
