Abstract

The fishing industry is essential for the global economy and human nutrition, representing a primary source of proteins and a livelihood for millions around the planet. The increase in global consumption of marine-derived proteins highlights the urgency of adopting sustainable practices in this sector. In Panama, fishing is a vital economic pillar, though it faces significant challenges such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU). Combating these practices through policies and strategies aligned with international standards is crucial for preserving the industry's sustainability.

Additionally, the behavior of fishermen, their interaction with regulations, and the economic environment are decisive in fishery management. In this context, the use of mathematical and statistical tools, such as the analysis of the length-weight relationship, becomes crucial for understanding the population dynamics of the species and optimizing their management, especially those of commercial interest.

This study focused on a quantitative methodology with a non-experimental and correlational cross-sectional design. As a result, a correlation between the length and weight of the fish was established, demonstrating the importance of using length as a predictive indicator of weight. This relationship is key to controlling the age of the fish caught, thus ensuring more sustainable fishing.
