Abstract

Currently our country is going through a specific debate that has to do with the improvement of the quality of education, and is that there is a growing concern about the high rate of failures that occur at the national level in mathematics, as well as the low performance in standardized tests that assess various school skills such as mathematics through standardized evaluation systems worldwide such as the Jadue (2012), Goméz-Chacon, (2003). The main objective of our research was to develop a program called Mathfulness based on cognitive-behavioral techniques and mindfulness distributed in twelve sessions, to improve the performance in the mathematical sciences of a sample of fifth grade students of the Santa Librada School in San Miguelito Panama. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental study was carried out with pre-test-post-test design and comparison group, which allowed to determine changes in four variables associated with performance in mathematics: attention, anxiety, reasoning and calculation, after the intervention or application of the program. The results led us to conclude the utility of the program to reduce anxiety, increase the levels of attention and increase the performance in calculation tests, based on the quantitative data provided by the tests.
