Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the prevalence of postpartum anxiety in a sample of new mothers in Panama City, through a qualitative study, with an observational-cross-sectional type of research. A non-probabilistic sampling yielded a total of 30 members of the organization “Revolución de la Teta”, where an authorization document was initially sent to the ambassadors of the organization “Revolución de la Teta”, to be reviewed and signed by the ambassadors so that they could give their authorization to use the organization “Revolución de la Teta” to be part of the main population of the study. A survey was administered to all participants via e-mail and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, which evaluates the psychological, physical and behavioral aspects of anxiety, was used, applied virtually. The results showed that 17 mothers, equivalent to 47% of the total, are in the mild anxiety range; 8 mothers, equivalent to 38% of the total sample, are in the moderate anxiety range; and 5 mothers, belonging to 16% of the sample, are in the severe anxiety range, demonstrating the existence of prevalence of postpartum anxiety in first-time mothers aged 21-30 years during the first three (3) months in Panama City, Panama.
