Abstract

The main goal of this study was to describe the perception that caregivers of people with ASD have regarding stigma and its association with level of functioning and presence of disruptive behaviors. A non-probabilistic sample of 104 caregivers of people with ASD, entered the website and completed a survey about perceptions about major needs of caregivers of people with ASD.  The results showed that, in the studied sample, discrimination by having a child with ASD has low impact (20.83%). As for the impact, the level of functioning, stigma was reported in 10.41% for the high functioning group, while 6.24% for the moderate functioning level, and 4.16% in the low functioning level group.  Although the impact of level of functioning and disruptive behaviors in caregivers of people with ASD is low in our sample, the results offer valuable information for the study of ASD in Panama.
